The Problem of Severe Overweight (Morbid Obesity)

Our body fat is a store of food energy (calories), which represents the difference between the food taken in and the energy used (both at rest and in exercise). This concept is called the Energy Balance.

Exercise is healthy, but uses energy much more slowly than it can be taken in as food. Carrying a heavy burden of body fat harms people’s health and quality of life in ways that are well publicised. You may have experienced some of them. They include (among others).

    • Diabetes and its complications

    • Social, employment and psychological difficulties

    • High blood pressure, heart disease and their consequences

    • Breathing difficulties

    • Back and joint disease

    • Urinary and fertility issues

There is a great deal of discussion and publicity about the current causes of obesity, but the energy balance is not disputed.
At present, bariatric surgery has been clearly shown to help with lasting major weight loss in the majority of severely overweight people.

Major weight reduction can be shown to reduce and reverse the health risks above.
